  • A quartz clock is a clock that uses an electronic oscillator that is regulated by a quartz crystal to keep time. This crystal oscillator creates a signal with very precise frequency, so that quartz clocks are at least an order of magnitude more accurate than good mechanical clocks.

  • (Quartz Watches) Watches with analogue or digital display, whose movement is powered by a quartz. The quartz analogue watch: The division of the time functions by means of quartz, whose vibrations are generated by a battery. The analogue time display is shown by electrically driven hands.

  • (Quartz Watches) These watches use a quartz crystal to measure time and a battery for power. You do not need to wind these watches up.

  • (part) something determined in relation to something that includes it; "he wanted to feel a part of something bigger than himself"; "I read a portion of the manuscript"; "the smaller component is hard to reach"; "the animal constituent of plankton"

  • (of two things) Move away from each other

  • Cause to divide or move apart, leaving a central space

  • the local environment; "he hasn't been seen around these parts in years"

  • Divide to leave a central space

  • (part) separate: go one's own way; move apart; "The friends separated after the party"

Swiss parts, you know!

As fitted to the same 'Rotary' watch as in the previous photograph. I complained to the manufacturer's UK agent about the uneven-ness of the movement, and they stuck this one in instead.

Not a great improvement, but much smoother... Rough-edged PCB and tunable trimmer capacitor.

Pentax MX, 50mm lens reversed, flash, Ektachrome ISO100 slide film.

ESA 944-111 7-Jewel Swiss Quartz Movement

Nice Swiss-made quartz watch by Avia from about 1985, in a Hong-Kong manufactured stainless-steel case.

Note the tuning capacitor - handy to slow down this particular watch, as the crystal 'ages' and the frequency increases. Not many quartz movements are fitted with these now. Note also the heavy use of plastics for the non-movement critical parts!
